Chapter One of the Bedford Book of Genres was interesting to me as it described the connection between genre and the success a reader has understanding your writing. I thought this was interesting because I never thought genre affected the understanding of a piece of writing in such large way. I also learned of the rhetorical situation, and how a writer needs to adapt his or her work to fit their audience’s expectations and needs. I found the section where two articles discussing the same topic by using different genre choices interesting. Despite the articles telling the same story, they read very different from one another, and gave a different feeling based on how the information was delivered to their respective audiences. I found it interesting that I was compelled to read both articles even though the majority of the information was the same. I never thought telling the same story with a change of genre could affect its delivery and not change the audience’s desire to read. Also, the section discussing the option to use multiple genres in one piece of writing was interesting. I thought you should always choose one genre and stick to it, to avoid confusion to your reader. How genre can be applied to other things than writing is also interesting, such as music and film. How they are used to compel ideas and feelings is very powerful, and allows for a deeper connection to what is being watched, listened to.
