Roxanne Gay’s story of using a series of books to get her through some of the hardest and most uncomfortable times in life is a very common coping mechanism and is very popular among youth today. Using something such as a book, television show, movie, or even music is a very healthy way to find confidence and comfort within oneself, and can have a very positive effect on the psyche. High school is usually an incredibly awkward and uncomfortable period in young people’s lives, so using something to cope such as a novel is a great way to handle the stresses of young adult life. Gay’s obsession with the Sweet Valley novels is comparable to my escape from high school troubles with cheerleading. I was on the competitive cheer team for my school as well as a travel team during high school. This allowed me a release and something to look forward to after school. Cheerleading brought me so much happiness both inside and outside of the classroom and lifelong friendships that I will cherish forever. Like Gay’s use of the Sweet Valley books, we were both able to find something that made us comfortable and maintain a healthy mindset. Anything that allows for a growth of confidence or character is a great thing, and very popular today with books, clubs, movies and television. Young people tend to gravitate to these media types because they are relatable, popular, and usually funny. This coping mechanism is very helpful and a safe way to escape from the drama from one’s personal life. Allowing yourself to have some aspect of fantasy or escape is a great way to maintain a healthy mindset that translates to your performance at school, and even the relationships with family and friends you have. Whether it be dreaming of that first place trophy, or aligning yourself into a book or television show, it is a great way to keep a stable mental frame and improve mood and motivation.
