After reading Chapter 11 on “Identity” of The Bedford Book of Genres I was interested in the idea that what you like, how you act, how you think affects your writing. In the second paragraph, the book quotes, “when we express something about identity, we create.” meaning that whatever we do depends on our own creative choices, purpose, message and audience. This made me think about how everyone writes differently, even if its about the same topic or idea. Our own form of identity affects how we articulate, express, and inform. However, the book also poses an interesting thought, is it fair to judge someone’s character or identity based only on what we see, or their possessions? Someone may read much differently based on the things they have or wear before we hear them open their mouths. It is important to take your own identity into consideration to give your writing your own personal twist. If writing took place without identity, everything would sound the same, and thus, very boring. Having a strong sense of identity makes writing unique and strong. The sample texts in this chapter were very interesting, as each made different arguments and ideas regarding identity. They all prove that a strong sense of identity affects how you present your arguments and use your own voice when writing.
